Job vacancy for Director of Peacekeeping and Regional Security

Objectives

  1. Facilitate, coordinate and document priority regional programmes and activities to support and complement Members States’ endeavors relating to fostering peace and security issues;
  2. Coordinate communication on ECOWAS peace and security framework and activities within the region, the continent and outside, through various media;
  3. Facilitate and support the harmonization of peace and security advocacy positions and strategies, including development of advocacy material, events, meetings, trainings and exercises;
  4. Articulate and develop the new Peace Support Division and its subsequent components, in line with African Union guidelines;
  5. Consolidate the ECOWAS rapid deployment capacity and develop ECOWAS Standby Force Brigade including its civilians and police components, within the framework of the United Nations and African Union Vision;
  6. Reinforce the capacity of the ECOWAS Commission and Member States to implement the ECOWAS Convention on SLAW;
  7. Forster the exchange of information and coordination of activities of Member States’ security service to tackle emerging threats, through the servicing of the committee of heads of security service.
  8. In accordance with the priorities identified and agreed work plans, direct and harmonize interventions of partners, UN, AU and other  international agencies;
  9. Network and maintain relationship with civil society and other actors working on peace and security at national and regional levels; maintain and update a database of peace and security initiatives.
Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Political Science, International Relations, International Diplomacy, Public Administration, Sociology, Law  or relevant field
  • At least 12 years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in Peace and Security, Conflict Prevention, Management, Resolution, Post-Conflict activities on the African Continent or elsewhere
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience managing others, preferably in a supervisory capacity within an international organization
  • Specific knowledge in areas of Peace and Security, Crisis Management, Conflict Resolution, Activities In Management Of Fragile States, DDR, Security Sector Transformation etc.
  • Knowledge of challenges and response to African and regional integration, ECOWAS  mechanism is desirable
  • Ability to chair meetings efficiently and effectively
  • Good communication skills for influencing groups of peers and stakeholders outside the organization (public speaking, writing, persuasiveness, credibility, negotiation, problem-solving)
  • Good interpersonal social skills for working with peers and subordinate staff (listening ability, approachability, clear oral expression)
